  • What is a reasonable accommodation?

    A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to a job. These modifications enable individuals with a disability to have an equal opportunity to successfully perform their job tasks.

  • Who qualifies for a reasonable accommodation?

    A person who has been determined to have a disability, meets the qualifications for the job, and can perform the essential functions of the position with or without an accommodation.

  • What are essential functions of a job?

    Essential functions of the job are basic job duties that must be completed my others who hold similar positions. Additionally, time spent performing a function, the consequence of not performing a function, and the unit’s judgement about the essential nature of the function are all factors that must be considered when determining the essential functions of the job.

  • How do I apply for an ADA accommodation?

    Faculty, staff and visitors can apply for an ADA accommodation by submitting the required forms list on our website. Faculty and staff can request an ADA Accommodation by completing the ADA Accommodation Request Form. Additionally, the employee must submit a Physician Verification of Accommodation Form completed by the medical practitioner to accommodations@fiu.edu. The doctor must review the job description prior to completing the Physician Verification of Accommodation Form.

  • Who determines if I am if I can get an ADA accommodation?

    The Office of Access, Compliance, and Equal Opportunity are responsible for overseeing ADA and Accessibility for faculty and staff. Once all the documents are submitted to accommodations@fiu.edu, the ADA Coordinator, Nicole Attong will initiate the interactive process by reviewing the documents submitted, and at a minimum meet with the employee and supervisor (separately). There may be an occasion to gather additional information (verbally) from the health care provider. Communication with the health care provide can only be initiated after the employee submits a completed release of information form to accommodations@fiu.edu. The employee does not have to allow the ADA Coordinator to speak with their health care provide. If the health care provider is unavailable to the ADA Coordinator, a determination will be made based on the information contained in the case file.
